This patch of tropical rainforest had been eyed-up by logging companies when Quito’s former mayor purchased the land to construct a sustainable luxury eco-lodge creating a private reserve. Not a tree was felled in its making. Sustainability and luxury ecotourism are the focus of the lodge: it runs off hydro-electric power and uses recycled river water. Mashpi Lodge functions as a base for conservation projects, and guests can observe and participate in the initiatives in the on-site Labratory.
