Travel to Machu Picchu with writer John Hemming in April 2011

2011 marks a century since Hiram Bingham first came across the ruins of Machu Picchu, and exciting events will take place across Peru to celebrate the occasion. At Aracari, we have organised a very special trip led by one of the most important writers on Inca history; Dr. John Hemming wrote the classic work “Conquest of the Incas”, which has proven to be a definitive resource in its masterful recounting of the Spanish overthrow of the Inca Empire.

Almost 100 years ago, Hiram Bingham was led to the site by locals during his search for the legendary Inca stronghold of Vilcabamba. He was subsequently given a grant from the National Geographic society to help clear the ruins and revisited the site over the next few years.

With the help of National Geographic, the spectacular ruin was quickly brought to the attention of the world, and has since become known as one of the most important archeological sites in the Americas. You can find out more on the National Geographic website.

We are very pleased that John Hemming has agreed to do this celebratory trip exclusively for Aracari; he will be able to give in depth insight into many aspects of Inca history. The trip will be an excellent opportunity not only to travel to Machu Picchu, but to explore a destination rich in culture and history.

For more details and an itinerary outline visit our dedicated Machu Picchu centenary website and contact us for a detailed itinerary. We will also be running other special trips throughout the year.
